See our coverage on NBC and read a formal statement from Moonlight Veterinary Urgent Care regarding the recent Canine Upper Respiratory Illness.
In recent weeks, a concerning surge in cases of an upper respiratory infection (aka Kennel Cough Syndrome) in dogs has prompted heightened awareness among pet owners. Reports from veterinary clinics and concerned pet parents suggest an increase in dogs exhibiting symptoms such as coughing, sneezing, nasal discharge, and, in severe cases, difficulty breathing leading to pneumonia. Be aware that some productive coughs in dogs can appear like frothy vomit, or they can cough so hard it causes vomiting. The causative agents of this infection are still under investigation, with veterinary professionals and universities working diligently to unravel the mystery and establish effective treatment protocols. In the meantime, supportive care strategies provided by your veterinarian may include fluids for hydration, immune support supplements, cough medication, and potentially antibiotics more severe cases may require hospitalization and further treatment.

It’s crucial for pet owners, including our community members in San Diego, CA and Encinitas, CA to stay informed and take proactive measures to protect their cherished companions. This upper respiratory infection has demonstrated a range of effects, from mild to moderate symptoms to a few rare, severe cases resulting in fatalities. Dogs are also sick for much longer than expected with other variants. Recognizing the signs early, practicing good hygiene, and seeking prompt veterinary attention are pivotal steps in navigating this concerning situation. We advise you to discuss your dog’s vaccination plan with your family veterinarian. Limit social interactions with other dogs to those that are known to be healthy. If your pet is sick, stay home until 5 days after resolution of symptoms.

As we continue to gather information about this evolving situation, our focus remains on providing valuable insights to empower pet owners. Understanding the potential severity of the illness underscores the importance of preventative measures and responsible pet care practices. If you observe any of the above-stated symptoms in your furry friend, we strongly urge you to have your pet seen by a veterinarian promptly.
